Uses of Bromocriptine

Bromocriptine is used for the treatment of infertility among other medical conditions. The most common brand name for this medicine is Parlodel. The other conditions for which bromocriptine is administered are amenorrhea, a condition in which menstrual period does not occur at all, hypogonadism, abnormal discharge of milk from breast, Parkinson’s disease and a condition of abnormal production of growth hormones in the body. As a fertility drug it is not used as widely as clomifene. It is mainly used in women with ovulation problem caused by excessive production of hormone prolactin by the pituitary gland. The excess production of prolactin is caused by a benign tumor in the pituitary gland or by a reduction in dopamine in the brain. The excessive prolactin finally prevents ovulation. This is also the reason for abnormal discharge of milk.
