Does lying down help conception?

For a long time, many people have been trying to increase the chances of conception by having the best positions during intercourse. So far, there is no position that is backed by clinical tests to increase the chances. To the best of our knowledge, no scientific tests are conducted even now to find out the effectiveness of any position to produce a child. But beliefs and common sense dictates are that some positions are more effective than others. The effectiveness of some of the common positions adopted by many couples is described below.

The best positions

The position that is commonly called the ‘missionary position’ is said to be the best position to produce a child. In this position, the man is on top. It allows the maximum penetration and thus leaves the sperms right next to the opening of the womb. Another position to get a high reach is penetration from behind. The penetration in this case is equal to or a little more than the missionary position. This can be had by both lying down or by the woman going on all fours. The lying down position is with woman in front and the man behind. When the woman goes on all fours, the man stands behind. In both these positions, the sperm is deposited right next to your cervix. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been conducted on what is going on inside while intercourse takes place in different positions. The images have shown that in both these positions, missionary and behind, the tip of the penis reaches the recesses between the cervix and the walls of the vagina.

The worst positions

Some experts are of the opinion that the chances of conception are the least when the woman is on top or when sitting or standing position is adopted. Their reasoning is that in these positions, the sperm has to swim upwards against the force of gravity. The chances are better for the sperm to reach the egg in the fallopian tube when it swims downward or horizontally.

Effect of orgasm on conception

A male orgasm is absolutely necessary for conception. Male orgasm releases the sperms into the woman. There is an outside chance of sperms escaping from the man before the ejaculation. But the number of sperms is minimal in this case. So the chances of a sperm reaching the egg are very little. In a male orgasm, the number of sperms released is in millions. A conception is possible even without a female orgasm. The egg is already waiting in the fallopian tube to be fertilized by a sperm. New researches have shown that the female orgasm has a role to play in conception. Contractions accompanying a female orgasm may aid the journey of sperm to the egg. For this, the woman must have orgasm along with or immediately after the male orgasm.

Boy or girl?

Some say sex with the woman on top produces a girl and one with man on top causes a boy. However, this has no scientific backing.(Read more about Best reviewed Choosing Baby Gender Program)

Does lying down help conception?

Theoretically, it helps if the woman lies down for half-an-hour after sex with her hip and back raised on a pillow. The force of gravity helps the sperm to swim to the fallopian tube. Lying on your back and ‘bicycling’ with your legs also helps conception.

(The above-said methods are only common beliefs to increase the chances of conception and are not scientifically backed.)
